One thing I’ve recently found out about the importance of sensors, is above all how they affect the focal lenght of your lenses. I mean, it was pretty clear that a full sensor camera will capture better the light, will have more details, and more information for the pictures to work on, including that funny detail that is that everything you see on your viewfinder, is going to appear on the picture. On the other hand, we will have the rest of cameras, which sensor isn’t full-frame, which will crop the sides of what’s on the viewfinder, as there will be part of the image which light won’t be captured and then recorded by the sensor.

Sensor sizes

So what does it have to do with my lenses? I mean, it isn’t captured, and that’s all, right? That’s what I thought, and I was terribly wrong. Because this size difference between the sensors, has quite an importance on a DSLR, as it will make your lense work different as it’s supposed to, unless is a specific lense for smaller sensors, which most of them aren’t. Therefore, if I have a 50mm lense that’s only going to work like that on a full-frame camera, so to know what’s the equivalence in my camera, I will have to multiply the number by x1.5 in Nikon, and x1.6 in Canon.

Then, my 50mm lense in a Nikon camera will work as if it was a 75mm. And if I wanted a 50mm, I should get myself a 35mm lense, aproximately. So basically you’ll have to keep this in mind, as if you need a wide angle lense, you will have to look for something as wide as possible, and on the other hand, if you need a telephoto lense you will have to keep in mind that your current lense is always going to be a little bit more tele than it is supposed to.
